Elgg-perimenting with another tool

I’m working on creating an online language learning community. I’d love to build the environment from scratch, but my time is as limited as my skills. I’m looking through the open source community for a platform that will suit my needs.

My latest tool is Elgg, a tool that’s similar to moodle, in that it’s an open source product created for educational use. It’s been on my radar for a few years because it integrates social networking, blogging, multiple communities, and tags, all of which are important parts of my speakeasy project. Elgg is being used with a number of universities, and with the eduspaces.net community. Wikipedia has a few good elgg links, like this one about elgg and connectivism.

This article provides a good overview of Elgg, Moodle, and Drupal and how they could be used in the classroom. I hope it works for my uses too. This weekend I’m setting it up to see what it will do and how close it will come to doing what I want.

You also might want to check out DrupalEd — it’s actually a tool that evolved out of the post you linked to above concerning Elgg, Moodle, and Drupal —

The announcement post concerning DrupalEd is at http://www.funnymonkey.com/come-and-get-it
